We are three graphic designers from different countries who happen to meet in an exchange program at Bauhaus Universität in Weimar, Germany. Alexandra Durand is from Montreal, Canada. She recently graduated from Concordia University. Patrizia Levi is from Brescia, Italy. She graduated from Free University of Bozen. Ana Lùcia Magalhaes is a Brazilian designer from Belo Horizonte. She currently works for different companies in the field of marketing, graphic design, and fashion photography.
‘Wendy im Wind’ is a memory game with twelve pairs of identical cards. The differences between the cards lie in the girl’s hair, her facial expression, and the pattern of her scarf.
The story of this game starts in the north of Germany. In the fall of 2014, we joined a university excursion for our project class to the island Hiddensee.
We were tasked to design a board game to be printed at Spielkarten Fabrik, a playing card factory in Stralsund.
In order to find inspiration, we decided to go trekking and explore the island. It was November, therefore promising to be chilly. We were wandering by the seaside, with the wind blowing crazily in our hair and the menace of an approaching storm. It was an adventure!
The playing card factory was amazing. We had the chance to experiment with traditional printing techniques. We drew our character in the same style, and then transferred it to pieces of tetrapak. The figures were then cut, shaped, and inked with blue.
We printed the cards with a proof press. Because it is a very manual process, every print is different and unique. When the ink was dry, we cut our cards, and the game was done. Get ready to take the Wendy im Wind challenge!
